  • Example Update, 130 MB file

    • We have a 130 MB file
    • We change about 5 kb of data in it
    • There are no other files this time. The numbers would look even better, when the total size would be 500 MB, of which 1 file has 5 KB changes.

    Results:

    • casual downloads: 130 MB, or less, due to compression, let's say 100 MB.
    • rsync:
      • addons/aiaktalik.pbo.gz20kB/s 0:00:00 (xfer#2, to-check=2/7)
        130.40M 100% 175.84MB/s 0:00:00 (xfer#3, to-check=1/7)
        sent 124.93K bytes received 80.04K bytes 45.55K bytes/sec
total size is 130.40M speedup is 636.20

We have used 204.97 KB instead of 100 MB, and speeded up 636.20 times compared to downloading the full, changed file.

So per user you save around 100 MB of download, take that times 1000 users and you've saved 100 GB traffic. For 1 mod update.
Make that 10 updates, and you've saved 1 TB.
Make that for 100 mods, and you've saved 100 TB.

    Example Update, 800 MB files

    • We have 800 MB of files
    • We changed all the files very minorly, and added 3 new files in total 103 MB.

    Results:

    • casual downloads: 800 MB, or less, due to compression, let's say 700 MB.
    • rsync:
      • 130 MB transfered

We save 570 MB of data transfered, per user
